Dog having hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a zero impact form of exercise allowing the free movement of limbs in a non-weight bearing environment.

The buoyancy of the water supports the body therefore reducing weight and relieving pressure on the joints and muscles. Hydrotherapy aids in relaxation of the muscles allowing the healing process to take place.

The hydrotherapy pool here at Mildmay has been designed by West Coast Products who have over 15 years’ experience in building canine pools. Our pool is tested three times daily to make sure we maintain a high standard of hygiene and the correct levels of components are in the water.

Water treatments are used when necessary to keep the pool clean and ready to use at all times, all of the treatments we use are approved by the canine hydrotherapy association.

Our pool is 10ft long, 4ft wide and 4ft deep allowing us to manoeuvre around the pool and have access to your dog at all times during the treatment. The pool also has two hydro-jets which are adjustable for both flow rate and direction of flow; we also have an anti-slip ramp allowing gradual entry and exit to the pool. The water is heated between 28⁰C and 30⁰C, this warmer water increases the blood flow to the muscles allowing the hydrotherapy to be at its most effective.

Hydrotherapy encourages full range of movement which helps build muscle in the weak areas, it also tones muscle and promotes tendon repair without causing unnecessary stress on surrounding tissues.

What conditions benefit from hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy can be used in the treatment of arthritis, orthopaedic conditions, muscle repair, as well as helping with convalescence, obesity and general fitness.

Specific benefits of hydrotherapy

The particular value of hydrotherapy comes about because of the effects of the temperature and pressure of the water. Some of the main benefits of hydrotherapy treatment are as follows:

  • Joint mobilisation.
  • Muscle strengthening and maintenance.
  • Relief from pain, swelling and stiffness.
  • Cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs).

The best way to start off is to call Mildmay on 01962 854088 and speak to the hydrotherapy staff who will be happy to help with your enquiry.

As Hydrotherapy becomes increasingly more popular it is being used to compliment a wide range of medical and surgical conditions such as the following:

  • Chronic osteoarthritis.
  • Hip dysplasia and OCD (osteochodrosis dissicans).
  • Post-operative fractures, ligament repair and joint stabilisation.
  • Spinal conditions.

We require a referral form from your regular veterinary practice, explaining what the dog will be swimming for and that they are happy for the dog to swim with us. This will all be explained when you phone the practice for more information.

Some people like their dogs to swim for general fitness, some for weight control and others because of medical reasons, whatever the reason is we will be happy to help. We do require your dog to be up to date with his or her vaccinations before they can use the pool.

There are many more conditions hydrotherapy is used for. If you have any enquiries on this please call Mildmay Veterinary Hospital on 01962 854088.
